Miami Art Scene

Perhaps Miami is an unlikely candidate to be on the cutting edge of the modern art scene, but The New York Times reports that the city shows that there’s art in its heart.

In the article “The Miami Art Scene: The Beach Party Moves Indoors,” the cultural mecca is explored, from the Art Basel Miami Beach festival to the Arsenal Mall, the nation’s first contemporary art shopping mall. Mr. Riley, the director of the Miami Art Museum says, “The Miami art scene is somewhere between young adulthood and late adolescence. It’s no longer a kid, but it’s still happy-go-lucky and trying to figure out what it wants to do with its future.”

There’s now over 70 galleries in the city, nestled in the Art Deco architecture, bringing the city to the edge of the glamorous contemporary art scene. There’s a complete guide to these galleries in the conclusion of the article, along with listings of design stores and places to party.

If you’d like to see the scene in slideshow format, check out “A Year Round Art Party in Miami,” also by The New York Times.

Experience the Everglades

Florida EvergladesThe Everglades Photo uploaded by djrue

The Los Angeles Times recently published an article that praises the Everglades as a national treasure. Entitled “Still Waters Run Deep in Florida’s Everglades,” the article follows the journey of reporter Thomas Swick as he discovers all the hidden treasures of the national park.

From mangrove to alligator, Thomas sees it all. He learns that the Everglades are the best place to watch the stars, take a walk on a winter’s night, and watch little green anoles scutter around in the underbrush. He meets Maureen, a Flamingo district interpreter who says, “It’s a gift to live this close. There are days when I drive home after work, change my clothes, and come back in the evening.”

After reading this article, you’ll be ready to experience this natural wonder for yourself. Our Go Miami Card offers a tour of the Everglades, which includes 6 hours of time in the park, including an air boat ride and a trip to the Wildlife Refuge.

Fun for Those Under 21 In Miami

On our”Ask a Travel Expert” post, Janae asked:

Q: Hey, travel expert! My two girls and are traveling to Miami, Florida for 6 days; two of them are the days that we will be arriving and leaving Miami…so we actually have 4 days to really do some full day activities. My question is: What non-expensive, 20 year old fun could we have in Miami for our trip? And what’s the best, most reliable ways to get around with or without a car?
Thanx bunches!!!

A: Well, Janae, here are some suggestions for you.

You could always hit the beach! The water may not be quite warm enough to swim in but the beach is ever so relaxing and people watching is an event.

Bayside Marketplace
is another suggestion which offers many options. There are tons of great restaurants (many overlook the bay) such as The Knife, Argentine Steakhouse and the Hard Rock Café. Free live music is a daily occurrence in the center of the marketplace.

There are also several inexpensive cruises, especially if you have a Go Miami Card. Island Queen Cruises is one of the more popular which offer narrated cruises of Millionaire’s Row and Star Island.

The Art Deco Welcome Center offers guided walking tours of the famous Miami Beach architecture for $15 with the Go Miami Card and there’s also a number of tours of the City, Everglades and Key West. This is a great way to see the city if you aren’t renting a car.

To get around without a car, the bus system is excellent. The South Beach Local offers daily passes or it’s just $1 per ride. Pick up a bus map upon your arrival. Or, there’s always the Miami Beach Bicycle Center which offers daily rentals at a reasonable price and it’s included with the Go Miami Card.

I hope this helps you have a wonderful time in Miami. Good luck!
