Experience the Everglades

The Los Angeles Times recently published an article that praises the Everglades as a national treasure. Entitled “Still Waters Run Deep in Florida’s Everglades,” the article follows the journey of reporter Thomas Swick as he discovers all the hidden treasures of the national park.

From mangrove to alligator, Thomas sees it all. He learns that the Everglades are the best place to watch the stars, take a walk on a winter’s night, and watch little green anoles scutter around in the underbrush. He meets Maureen, a Flamingo district interpreter who says, “It’s a gift to live this close. There are days when I drive home after work, change my clothes, and come back in the evening.”

After reading this article, you’ll be ready to experience this natural wonder for yourself. Our Go Miami Card offers a tour of the Everglades, which includes 6 hours of time in the park, including an air boat ride and a trip to the Wildlife Refuge.

Winter in Miami

Now that the excitement of New Year’s Eve has died down, it’s time to think about planning a fabulous vacation to welcome in 2008. Late last year, The New York Times compiled a list of 53 Places to Go in 2008.

Laos and Lisbon top the list, but Miami’s Mid-Beach and South Beach come in at a very respectable #5 and 6. In addition to it’s world famous beaches, South Beach also boasts attractions like the Bass Museum of Art and the Jewish Museum of Florida.

So, what are you waiting for? With winter temperatures hovering in the 70’s and 80’s, now is the perfect time to visit Miami!

MIA has opened a brand new and much needed terminal. The new structure known as South Terminal adds 1.7 million square feet to the “Gateway of the America’s”. The terminal supports 19 airlines servicing 72 cities and 28 countries. Opening soon inside the state of the art building will be 39 restaurants, retail and duty free shops.

The new Federal Inspection Service Area will be able to process international passengers at the incredible rate of 2,000 per hour (!). A new bus terminal exclusively for cruise and tour passengers is also slated to open soon. It also features striking architecture with tall glass walls and eye-catching, South Florida-themed artwork. The terminal will handle about 25% of MIA’s 32 million passengers annually.

August 29th was officially the terminal’s first flight but on November 30th, the airport hosted a grand opening for a bout 500 elected officials, airport executives, community leaders and members of the public. Governor Jeb Bush was on hand as well as Bill Talbert, President and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, who served as the master of ceremonies.

Flight Changes on Horizon for 2008

December 19th, 2007 by susan j

According to a recent USA Today article, changes are in store for next year that could make flying easier and more enjoyable. For instance, JetBlue began testing in-flight email this year and other airlines are expected to follow suit in 2008. New developments in security screening technology will (hopefully) streamline the security process. And several major airports will expand, meaning (presumably) less crowding and more amenities.

What do you think of these new developments? Will flying become easier in 2008 or will these trends create additional complications? Leave a comment and let us know!

According to MSNBC, more than 27 million people will be flying this week for Thanksgiving. If you’re among them, then you’ll want to read Peter Greenberg’s last-minute travel tips. The Today Show contributor tells readers not to gift warp anything in their luggage (unless they want to be pulled out of the security line and questioned) and to ship bags ahead of time if at all possible. Since Thanksgiving is such a high-traffic time for the airways, President Bush recently approved a “Thanksgiving express lane” from Florida to New England and added additional measures to avoid delays. Happy Thanksgiving!

Miami Heat ready for 07-08 campaign

October 25th, 2007 by keith f

Miami sports fan are wondering… is the window of opportunity still open for the 2006 NBA Champions Miami Heat? The two centerpieces of this team are still in place but Shaquille O’Neal and Dewayne Wade are now 2 years removed from that championship, 2 years older and for Wade, 2 surgeries later.

The off season moves leave a lot to be desired with the signings of Penny Hardaway (yes that Penny now 36), DeQuan Cook, Smush Parker and Alexander Johnson. Gone are sharpshooter Jason Kopono and veterans James Posey and Eddie Jones. This team may be hard pressed to repeat last years disappointing 1st round exit from the playoffs-bottom line, it all depends on the health of those 2 centerpieces.

This aging team still employs the likes of Antoine Walker and Alonso Mourning. The ever dapper 5 time World Champion coach Pat Riley will try to will this team to the playoffs which may be a tall order but with a special player like DeWayne Wade, anything is possible.

If the pre-season is any indication of things to come, 0-7 for the first time in team history, the Heat may be in for a long season which begins at home against the Detroit Pistons on November 1st. The good news, South Beach is a 10 minute drive from the arena!
