Jungle Island’s Lemur Experience

November 20th, 2009 by admin

Lemur Experience

For the first time, South Florida visitors and residents will be able to get up-close and personal with some of the rarest primates on Earth. Jungle Island’s Lemur Experience allows members of the public the chance to learn extensively about these colorful and vivacious creatures, while interacting with them in a hands-on way.

The 45-minute experience brings small groups of guests – no more than six at a time – in the park’s Lemur Nursery, where young ring-tailed lemurs, and the rare red-ruffed and black-and-white ruffed lemurs are growing up and developing. Before the interaction begins, the guests are educated about the lemurs natural habitat, diet and habits and are advised of the best way to pet them and feed them their favorite treat – juicy grapes.

When everyone is comfortable, the lemurs come out to meet their newest friends (and servers!) Quite the rambunctious crowd, the lemurs often make themselves right at home either on guests’ laps, shoulders or heads. (Don’t worry – they don’t charge for their hair styling services.) After a lemur has leaped off of your head, you’ll never be quite the same!

Native only to the island of Madagascar, lemurs are considered very rare in the animal kingdom. While some species of lemurs have actually gone extinct as a result of habitat destruction, the three types of lemurs on Jungle Island are each classified as either endangered or threatened.

As in their natural environment, the female lemurs certainly run the show. Female dominance is common in many branches of the animal kingdom (humanity arguably one of them) and the lemurs are certainly no exception. On Jungle Island, the dominant female is named Susie Q and all the males have been known to mind their P’s and Q’s around her.

Jungle Island’s Lemur Experience is offered daily, but advance reservations are suggested. The Lemur Experience costs $45 per person for the 45-minute experience and can accommodate up to six guests at a time. Reservations can be made by calling (305) 400-7275 between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, 7 days per week.

Jungle Island, Miami’s entertainment destination, is located in the heart of the city between Downtown Miami and South Beach. The multifaceted grounds host Miami’s newest theme park, home to the world’s most rare and incredible animals. Guests marvel at the engaging animal shows and presentations, participate in hands-on interactions with fascinating animals, and are amazed by the park’s breathtaking landscapes and vistas.

Jungle Island general admission is included on a Go Miami Card or a Go Orlando Card. It can also be one of your choices with a Miami Explorer Pass.

Swimming with Dolphins at the Miami Seaquarium

May 1st, 2008 by ben c

Hey everyone, I’m beginning to upload videos all over the internet about the Go Card. You can find them on Youtube, Flickr, and other popular sites. We’re not going to make you scour the web, though. I’ll post them right here! Check out this video about the Miami Seaquarium.

While you can swim with the dolphins at the Seaquarium, Dolphin Harbor isn’t included with the Go Miami Card. You can certainly watch the dolphins though! Like the video says, dolphins prefer Go Card customers either way, even those who just watch. If you like the video, leave a comment, or check out the other Go Card videos at our YouTube page.

Miami Tourism Going Green

April 22nd, 2008 by susan j

Last year, the Four Seasons in Miami became the first green-certified hotel in Miami. It’s clear that travel companies and travelers themselves are becoming increasingly conscious of how their actions impact the environment. Today is Earth Day, why not think about going green on your next trip to Miami?

Here are some Miami attractions where you can celebrate animal and plant life.

  1. Miami Seaquarium features marine shows and educational exhibits set against the beautiful backdrop of Biscayne Bay. See dolphins, sharks, sea lions, manatees, and more.
  2. Miami MetroZoo is ranked among the top 10 zoos in the country. With 300 acres showcasing over 1,300 animals, the Miami MetroZoo offers something for everyone, from behind-the-scenes zookeeper tours to safari cycle rentals to animal feeding encounters.
  3. Miami Beach Bicycle Center offers a way to see Miami without creating traffic or pollution. Ride past popular destinations like Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road, Coconut Grove, and more.
  4. Pelican Harbor Seabird Station has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing sick and injured seabirds for over 25 years. The station welcomes visitors to tour the facility and learn more about preserving South Florida’s seabird populations.
  5. Miami Science Museum boasts South Florida’s largest natural history collection with over 60,000 artifacts and specimens covering zoology, paleontology, and more. They also offer a wildlife center and a planetarium.

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day and promote environmental awareness? Leave a comment, and let us know!

Miami Duck Tours a Fun Activity for All Ages

April 14th, 2008 by amie f

Miami Duck Tours
Miami Duck Tours photo uploaded by Go Card USA

Recently my friends and I checked out Miami Duck Tours on a weekend trip to Miami. I was surprised to discover how many famous movies were shot in the South Beach area. From the club scene in the remake of Miami Vice, to the apartment scenes in Ace Ventura Pet Detective to the infamous chainsaw scene in Scarface, you’ll think you are in Hollywood!

Our tour guide, “Rodney Dangerduck,” kept things lively with his trivia facts, jokes, and the occasional quack. He also pointed out many architectural nuances of South Beach that I will always associate with Miami. For instance, did you know that the Art Deco colors of the buildings are meant to mimic the colors of coral? Or that most of the buildings were designed to look like cruise ships, with smoke stacks and round portal windows?

The Duck Tour was a great way to tour the city and get a better idea of what we should check out while in Miami. Although the tour mainly focuses on Miami Beach and South Beach (which I learned are technically the same thing), you’ll also go over the MacArthur Causeway that connects greater Miami to Miami beach. You will also zoom past other great attractions, including Jungle Island, Miami Children’s Museum, and the Wolfsonian Museum. Don’t forget your camera!

It encourages both children and adults to have fun and “play with language,” discovering new and exciting things within themselves and the world around them. There’s over 25 activities set in environments inspired by the ones Seuess created in his books, ranging from balloon races to 3-ring circus fun.

If you’ve got a Go Miami Card, the exhibit and admission to the museum is free! You can even pick up souvenirs for the kids on the way out at a 10% discount in the museum store.
